Scholtz's Say
Trial Watch Reviews - 5th March 2026
Chris Scholtz reviews trials at Randwick and Wyong on March 5.
Randwick A Grass; Soft 5
16 Heats – 1 x 1200m (Open); 7 x 1050m (3 Open; 2 2YO; 2 C1/Maiden); 8 x 736m (1 Open; 4 2YO; 3 C1/Maiden)
Some unexposed talents impressed with promising trials.
GRAFFITI TYCOON (John O'Shea/Tom Charlton): Trial watchers have been waiting for this unraced 3YO gelding by Written Tycoon since he won his first trial in November. Another classy effort to surge home between his rivals for a soft win in his 736m heat (43.41; 33.13) that has him heading the right way towards his awaited debut.
LOERA (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): This Capitalist filly from the Golden Slipper winner Overreach has been on the Trial Watch list since she won her first trial at Warwick Farm last May. She's another we can anticipate to be ready for a bold debut after she won her 736m heat with style (43.18; 33.27), tracking wide and responding when called to win with authority. The runner up CHILLI MARGS is an NZ winner over 1400m and was having her first Sydney trial for Bjorn Baker. The Tivaci filly also impressed finishing off nicely over the last 200m.
LOREAL BELLE (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): The penny might have dropped for this unraced Written Tycoon filly as her strong win in the fastest 736m heat (42.83; 32.80) was her best effort in four trials. Expect she can go on from this is another to watch for in a suitable maiden.
SATOSHI (Mick Price/Michael Kent): Best of the 2YO heat winners over 736m (43.57; 33.36), this Wootten Bassett colt was having only his second trial and is a talent worth following. Pulled his way to the front on the turn and comfortably held his rivals in the run to the line. In the same heat the impeccably bred unraced colt HIERARCHY (Dubawi x Colette) took the eye working home for fifth in his first trial since December.
In the open class heat over 1200m (72.64; 35.07) high class Group winner GLOBE won his second Sydney trial by a dominant four lengths, working strongly in a far better performance than his earlier trial win at Rosehill on February 23. The quality mare VIVY AIR also looked in good form working home nicely for second.
LAZZURA was another classy Group winner to impress, finishing an easy second with plenty in reserve in the 1050m heat (63.25; 34.25) where the winner PERFUMIST really had to work for the victory, perhaps because she was held up and sat off the leader rather than running out to a big lead as she did in her previous trial win.
Previously noted POISONOUS, a 3YO gelding by Brazen Beau, is a Godolphin maiden with good prospects. He won three trials for James Cummings last season before his debut in June and is now unbeaten in two trials for his new trainer Bjorn Baker. He was in good form running away with his 1050m heat by almost five lengths (63.85; 34.77).
