Scholtz's Say
Trial Watch Review - 2nd March 2026
Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney trials at Warwick Farm on March 2.
Inside Grass; Soft 6
15 Heats – 3 x 1206m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 4 x 822m (4 Open); 4 x 820m (1 Open; 3 2YO); 4 x 817m (4 Maiden)
The return of classy grey BRIASA took the spotlight and he didn't disappoint.
BRIASA (Hawkes Racing): Too classy for his rivals in his 822m heat (49.45; 34.01) in his first trial since the spring. Easily took up the running and worked well within himself to maintain a comfortable advantage with the hitout certain to improve his fitness.
FLYING FOR FUN (Bryce Heys): Smart mare is set for a good campaign after an impressive win in her 822m heat (49.06; 33.31). She was cluttered up behind a line of leaders until well into the straight where she had to ease across heels to get clear running. Given room she strode out strongly to reel them in quickly and charge through the line full of running.
HELLENIC BELLE (Annabel & Rob Archibald): Unraced Hellbent filly was an impressive winner of her second trial in the fastest of the three 2YO heats over 820m (48.67; 34.39), leading with ease and not under any pressure to win by almost three lengths. Expect a good debut.
THE NEXT EPISODE (Ciaron Maher): Suggest this Snitzel colt is much better than what he produced on debut in the spring. He was noted in a previous trial and his effort to win this 820m heat (48.69; 34.10) in good time points to a good future. Settled off the leaders before easing to the middle of the track and responding well to surge home for a soft win.
MAZU was another G1 star to perform well, following up his recent trial win with a quieter ride to finish third in the 822m heat won by STARDOM (48.81; 33.98). It was a strong heat with nice trials by MAILATA and SCAMPI.
In the 1206m heats VAUBAN finished second in his heat behind easy winner LONG LEGS (74.03; 35.94) but was under a whip ride from the 500m to make ground. There was nice work in these open heats by DUSTY BAY, ENCAP and MAJORIAN while STAND MY GROUND and UNBRIDLED STORM are maidens to keep an eye on.
The shorter 822m and 820m heats saw nice wins by GALLO NERO, KISS GOODNIGHT and UBER IN while those making a good impression with promising trials included KING'S SECRET, KONOMIE, LIGULARIA, REBEL BLAZE, JONSON and BELLA WAHINE.
