Waller’s Scandal might have to wait another week
Godolphin youngster Sequinned will be striving to go one better than big brother Bivouac did at his first start.
Chris Waller has accepted with two fillies for the juvenile race at Randwick but only one will run with the champion trainer keen to give both horses an opportunity to make a winning debut.
Godolphin homebred Sequinned and Miss Scandal, a daughter of Waller's former smart sprinter Home Affairs, will be split between Saturday's Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1000m) and the Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill a week later.
Waller will wait until race morning to make a final decision on which filly lines up where, but he is leaning towards Sequinned taking her place at Randwick.
"I've got two in the race and I'm not going to run both of them because they're both good fillies," Waller said.
"I'll keep one for the Widden and it might well be this filly (Miss Scandal)."
"I will wait until Saturday morning because if Sequinned had a temperature or was feeling her shins, then she wouldn't run. But I don't want to run both of them."
Sequinned is by Pinaturbo out of Dazzler, making her a half-sister to young stallion Bivouac who was runner-up to Time To Reign at his first start before training on to post a trio of Group 1 wins, including the 2020 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.
Sequinned did a good job to finish second to Saturday's rival Home And Dry in her most recent trial after travelling wide throughout and has shown natural ability at home.
"She is well bred, a lovely filly and she's got a nice future," Waller said.
The youngster has drawn immediately inside Miss Scandal in barrier nine of 11 and Waller admits he is also mindful of the pair's awkward gates.
The stable will often scratch if they're unhappy with a horse's draw, Waller explaining the conservative approach is based on ensuring his runners have positive experiences.
"People wonder why we scratch from draws and it's not just because they can't win," Waller said.
"It's because they have tough runs and it affects their confidence."
James Mcdonald has the ride on Sequinned, a $5 chance, while Sam Clipperton is booked for Miss Scandal who is an early $3.10 favourite.
