Yulong cast-off delivers milestone win for young trainer
Wyong trainer Denim Wynen has celebrated a breakthrough victory with Sunshine Law.
The first Sydney meeting of the new season is one Denim Wynen won't be forgetting any time soon, the young Central Coast trainer celebrating her first metropolitan win with new stable addition Sunshine Law.
The 29-year-old had only had a handful of runners in town previously, but she was optimistic Sunshine Law would acquit herself well on what she'd seen from the mare at home.
"I'm so stoked," Wynen said.
"My trackwork rider said the first gallop she did on her that she thinks she is quite a serious horse, so for her to say that, I thought, I've got a nice horse."
Formerly with Annabel and Rob Archibald, Sunshine Law was picked up for $85,000 by her new owners through an online sale and was making her debut for the Wyong trainer.
The four-year-old is among just six horses Wynen has in work and the thrill of preparing a Saturday metropolitan winner at Rosehill is still sinking in.
"I still can't believe it's true," she said.
"They (owners) actually rang me the day before and said they were looking at a couple of tried horses online.
"They've been a big support to my stable over the last six months. They've bought some weanlings and they wanted to get to the races sooner, so they decided to go to the tried sales and picked up two nice horses from Yulong.
"I think we're going to have some fun with her."
Wynen started her training career by preparing a few horses for herself as a hobby before deciding to take on outside clients two years ago.
She said she fell into racing when school wasn't the right fit and credited fellow Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan for supporting her journey.
"I didn't want to go to school anymore when I was fourteen. My brother was working with horses and my mum said if I got a job I was allowed to leave school," she said.
"I went and worked for Kristen Buchanan. She took me in and she was like a mum to me and that's where I've been since."
Sunshine Law ($4.80) brought up a race-to-race double for apprentice Anna Roper, taking out the Congratulations James McDonald Handicap (1400m) by a half-length over Super Norwest ($7) with Pippie Beach ($4) third.
