What the beaten brigade said: Randwick and Caulfield
The beaten jockey comments after the Sydney and Melbourne features.
CAULFIELD
Group 1 - Sportsbet Caulfield Cup
(3yo+ Handicap - 2400m)
Race Result:
1st: Half Yours (T & C McEvoy/J Melham) - $2.50 fav
2nd: River Of Stars (C Waller/B Mertens) - $91
3rd: Valiant King (C Waller/J McNeil) - $26
Winning Time: 2:29.05 Last 600m: N/A
Margins: Long Neck x 1 length
Beaten jockey comments:
Blake Shinn (Vauban): "I felt he was unsuited by the Caulfield track today. He was on his Sydney leg and just didn't seem to corner that well on the corners, so the big flat track at Flemington will suit him much better."
Stephane Pasquier (Presage Nocturne): "He finished good because he hadn't run since four months (ago). It was good preparation for the Melbourne Cup."
Mark Zahra (Middle Earth): "He was a bit dour. Travelled well probably until the half-mile then couldn't pick up and was dour to the line."
Andrea Atzeni (Meydaan): "I thought it was a good run, he just got a bit lost coming down the hill when the pace lifted. To be fair to him, once we straightened up he really finished strongly. Maybe the track's a little bit tight for him."
Ben Allen (Absurde): "Massive run. A little bit disappointed. We just copped interference right as he was picking up. If we hadn't have copped that, he would have been right there in the finish."
Jamie Mott (Land Legend): "He was obviously disappointing. He felt to me he was out of breath halfway, so he might be holding his breath."
Harry Coffey (Zardozi): "She travelled like she was going to produce more in the straight but then was very one-paced and was probably peaking on her run with 100 to go. She's racing dour and I think she needs a little bit of give in the ground."
Jordan Childs (Adelaide River): "He just wanted to pull too hard during the early and middle stages and that affected his finish."
Billy Egan (Bankers Choice): "He did really well. I think just a drop in grade, at this distance, I think he's going good enough to put away a good country cup."
Daniel Stackhouse (Deakin): "He ran well. I was just disappointed with him late, I thought he would have been a bit stronger. I had to use him to get out of that pocket I was in and put him in the race, I thought we were a big chance on the corner, blended into it nicely and just as little but disappointing late but we'll keep pressing on."
Suguru Hamanaka (Golden Snap): "I was quite hopeful so we're quite disappointed. It felt like it was tougher than Japanese ground and he just didn't handle it."
Luke Currie (Revelare): "He raced a bit closer than what I'd hoped, but had a nice enough run. He just came straight off the bridle and didn't pick up at all."
Beau Mertens (River Of Stars): "Great run. She ran fantastic. Had a lovely run off a hot tempo, got held up a little bit rounding the home turn but I didn't lose too much momentum and I was just really pleased with the way she sprinted through that gap. She was extremely tough and just happy to see her run really well."
Teo Nugent (Birdman): "Began only fairly for me, was the first one loaded and probably went to sleep in the stalls. On the back foot early, had a nice run through, best work was late and loved the way he rounded off the race late.
Robbie Dolan (Royal Supremacy): "He finished the race off really good. It gives us options to go to the two miles on the first Tuesday. He just reared up a few times in the gates, just wanted to get on with the job and did race a little bit keen for a few strides but hit the line really good."
Jye McNeil (Valiant King): "The barrier's probably cost him winning to be honest. Absolute epic un for a Melbourne Cup."
Celine Gaudray (Plymouth): "Really honest run from a young horse. From the wide draw we were able to get into a beautiful position but he'll be one to look out for this time next year."

Group 1 - Schweppes Thousand Guineas
(3yo F SW - 1600m)
Race Result:
1st: Ole Dancer (P Moody & K Coleman/B Shinn) - $5.00
2nd: Apocalyptic (M Freedman/M Zahra) - $1.90 fav
3rd: Getta Good Feeling (D O'Brien/B Egan) - $8.00
Winning Time: 1:37.83 Last 600m: N/A
Margins: Short Neck x 3/4 lengths
Beaten jockey comments:
Mark Zahra (Apocalyptic): "She ran really well. We had a nice lead but the winner was just too good late."
Lachlan Neindorf (Ferivia): "No horse in that race has done what she's done this prep. She's sixth up into the Thousand Guineas in her first racing prep. It's just incredible. She was gone at the top of the straight, hit a flat a spot and she's come back out of it when she didn't have to and she's a Group 1 horse in the making, that's for sure."
Billy Egan (Getta Good Feeling): "It was a bit of a sit and sprint which didn't suit her. She fought on quite strongly through the line so 2000 (metres) and even more beyond that, so I think the Oaks will be a good hope for her."
Jye McNeil (Zany Girl): "She was slow to begin and too much went wrong for her and she struggled today."
Ben Allen (Salty Pearl): "Very honest. We had a good spot and couldn't get the leaders but I thought she was tough."
Luke Currie (Steel Trap): "Back from the wide draw, steady tempo, she was OK."
Andrea Atzeni (Cherish Me): "We had a good trip from a good draw. The pace was a bit steady and when they quickened, she just struggled with it."
Harry Coffey (Ethereum Girl): "She was OK. She would be be better in races with a bit more genuine speed. The sit and sprint didn't suit her today."
Nash Rawiller (Karinska): "I wouldn't judge her on today. She missed the kick, was back in the ruck, and just never got around Caulfield. She was on her wrong leg the whole way."
Daniel Stackhouse (Chateau Eze): "Very disappointing. Probably the lack of tempo and from the gate we decided to go back and it didn't work in our favour."
Jamie Melham (Mating Call): "She ran an enormous race. The plan wasn't to be that handy but she's going very well for a nice Adelaide autumn prep."

RANDWICK
Group 1 - The TAB Everest
(WFA - 1200m)
Race Result:
1st: Ka Ying Rising (D Hayes/Z Purton) - $2F
2nd: Tempted (C Maher/C Williams) - $16
3rd: Jimmysstar (C Maher/E Brown) - $13
Winning Time: 1:08.13 Last 600m: 33.62
Margins: 1¼L x Short Neck
Beaten jockey comments:
Tyler Schiller (Briasa): "I thought he has done a great job from back in the field. He didn't anticipate the start as he has been the last two. Just ended up a long way back. I thought he got the right cart into the race. Joliestar took us everywhere. He just couldn't finish off from back there."
Josh Parr (Overpass): "He showed what he is capable of. He is a high speed horse, gave a turn of foot today that I think was the best of his career. Fought it out to the shadows of the post. Obviously winner too good but very proud of my horse."
Ethan Brown (Jimmysstar): "Unreal. He ran out of his skin. A kinder gate would have done us a lot of favours. Good to see him closer. He gave his all. So proud of him."
Tim Clark (War Machine): "I was hoping to settle a pair closer than I did. He travelled well but just when the pressure went on, they left him a bit flat footed."
Jason Collett (Mazu): "He was brave. Took up the running there until late. Pretty good."
Kerrin McEvoy (Jedibeel): "He has run fantastic. Had to switch back to the inside. Was closest on the line. Ran a great race."
Ben Melham (Angel Capital): "Was a terrific performance. Just the 1400m back to 1200m when they sprinted, they just left him a little bit. He kept coming all the way to the line. It took him until the line to really hit his straps. Gallant performance. Horse is going really well."
James McDonald (Joliestar): "She was pretty good. I was happy with the run we had midfield and travelled up beautifully. I thought she was the winner at the 500m. She was just smoking. Just lost her action into the dip and for 50m out of the dip and then she got going. Never lost ground and never gained ground."
Damian Lane (Lady Shenandoah): "She ran super. At the 600m she didn't take the corner that well. Clipped Jimmysstar's heel on the outside. Just blundered at a vital stage of the race. Did well to pick up and finish the way she did."
Michael Dee (Magic Time): "She has quickened up really well. Just had to run impossible sectionals to be closer in the finish. She ran great."
Craig Williams (Tempted): "The winner is a superstar. My horse is a future mega-superstar. She was great. Credit to Ciaron Maher, the ownership group to come to a race like this. Definitely didn't disappoint and will benefit from this run again."

Group 1 - King Charles III Stakes
(3yo+ WFA - 1609m)
Race Result:
1st: Ceolwulf (J Pride/C Schofield) - $10
2nd: Mr Brightside (B, W & JD Hayes/C Williams) - $4.20F
3rd: Pier (D&B Weatherley/E Brown) - $51
Winning Time: 1:34.39 Last 600m: 34.86
Margins: 1¾L x ½ Neck
Beaten jockey comments:
Craig Williams (Mr Brightside): "It's a shame he was dealt a really hard barrier draw. He had a tough, difficult run. It shows the calibre of horse that he is that he still fought it out to run second. Another very brave performance from Mr B."
Tim Clark (Royal Patronage): "He jumped and travelled well. Just didn't have a horse from the 600m."
Zac Purton (Lake Forest): "A bit disappointing. He didn't like the speed of the race. When they quickened he was just empty."
Ben Melham (Tom Kitten): "It was a good return to form. He has had a messy start to his prep. I thought he ran well near his best. Just looking for a bit further now."
Josh Parr (Pericles): "He is not the type of horse who wants to be getting into a fight with others 400m from home. That happened today. Probably my fault."
Jason Collett (Yellow Brick): "He has run really good. Gave them a big start. He was keen early. FInished strong."
Ethan Brown (Pier): "Ran out of his skin. He is a good horse. I think up to 2000m it will really suit him."
Adam Hyeronimus (El Castello): "I thought his run was respectable. Pretty strong in the blinkers. If they can come off over 2000m I think he can execute."
James McDonald (Fangirl): "She has run really well. Just so hard to make up ground."
Declan Bates (Pride Of Jenni): "She took a while to build underneath me. It was a long way out to try and stretch them. She just didn't quite pick up as well as she can. Maybe a touch below par."
Rachel King (Within The Law): "Huge run. It was a big ask putting a 3yo against these seasoned horses. She certainly didn't disgrace herself. She is going super."

Group 3 - Toyota Forklifts Sydney Stakes
(3yo+ WFA - 1200m)
Race Result:
1st: Rothfire (R Heathcote/Z Purton) - $13
2nd: Iowna Merc (B Baker/A Morgan) - $21
3rd: With Your Blessing (J Thompson/A Collett) - $20
Winning Time: 1:08.52 Last 600m: 34.12
Margins: Short Neck x Long Head
Beaten jockey comments:
Ashley Morgan (Iowna Merc): "He was fantastic. I thought we quickened well enough to win the race. Rothfire was very tough full credit to him. My lad is a superstar who deserves to win a big prize."
Adam Hyeronimus (Golden Mile): "He will improve from the first up run at the races today."
Josh Parr (Dragonstone): "He will improve with that under his belt."
Tyler Schiller (Coal Crusher): "Very brave run. Run them into the ground which he loves to do. Just got a bit tired late. Cherry ripe for The Hunter."
Craig Williams (Libertad): "Annabel and Rob has done a great job first up. Very admirable not beaten too far."
Alysha Collett (With Your Blessing): "Extremely brave. That barrier with no cover took a bit of a toll late but a super run by him."
Chad Schofield (Ostraka): "He ran well. We had a perfect trip and it all opened up on the inside where I went. With Your Blessing has just rolled in but I wasn't going well enough to take that gap at that time. Has run well."
Jason Collett (Sandpaper): "Just too short. Further he'll be fine."
Tommy Berry (Caballus): "Probably not the only person to say it but if he draws a gate he probably goes close to winning. We had to take our medicine at the start and he just ran out of gas in the last 100m as he was entitled to after a long layoff.
Anthony Allen (Sha Of Gomer): "Really happy with him. Having that run under his belt was what we needed. Finished off well ready for 1400m."
Dylan Gibbons (Disneck): "Went as good as he could. Had a little bit of traffic early in the straight. Ran courageously."
Michael Dee (Fire Star): "Didn't step that well from the gates. Last 600m was great. Hit the line well."
Kerrin McEvoy (Beauty Charge): "Played up in the gates."
James McDonald (Generosity): "She was OK. Probably entitled to do a little bit more."
Rachel King (Shezanalister): "Had to go back from a wide gate. She didn't enjoy doing that."
