What the beaten brigade said: Randwick
What the beaten jockeys had to say after the G1 feature on Day 1 of The Championships.
RANDWICKGroup 1 - Inglis Sires'
(2yo SW - 1400m)
Race Result:
1st: Campione D'italia (C Waller/J McDonald) - $4.20
2nd: Miss Chanel (G Waterhouse & A Bott/R Bayliss) - $15
3rd: Fireball (C Waller/T Clark) - $18
Winning Time: 1:24.80 Last 600m: 36.47
Margins: ¾L x ¾L
Besten jockey comments:
Tim Clark (Fireball): "Ran extremely well. A lovely colt. Just the draw made it tricky for him. Gallant in defeat."
Zac Lloyd (Tornado Valley): "He was a bit one-paced in that ground."
Craig Newitt (Alibaba): "He ran a creditable race. There was a bit of a scrimmage on the corner, he snuck through and followed the winner through. Just didn't quite handle the ground."
Jason Collett (Paradoxium): "He's done well but the barrier, he needs softer runs than that."
Damian Lane (Zambales): "The horse ran huge. Made an error of judgement to cut the corner. Didn't get a run through. Then he was held up and got home well late."
Ethan Brown (Rich On Bubbles): "It's all come a bit quick for him. Will come back a better horse after a spell."
Sam Clipperton (Outspan): "Things didn't go his way and ran accordingly."
Tommy Berry (Am I Dreaming): "Struggled today."
Zac Purton (Dr Hook): "Just locked his jaw going into the first corner. It was a bit of a mess after that. It rattled him."
Ben Melham (Streisand): "She has done a tremendous job this prep. I feel she has come to the end of the preparation. Was a little keen early. Her run ended at the time."
Regan Bayliss (Miss Chanel): "Not many as tough as her. A gallant effort. She just copped a check at the start and was a bit further back. She had a lovely uninterrupted run into it and was strong through the line."
Rachel King (Rachini): "Flew out of the gates better than I thought she was going to. Just the last 100m when I let her really go, she sank in that track."

Group 1 - Asahi Super Dry TJ Smith Stakes
(WFA - 1200m)
Race Result:
1st: Joliestar (C Waller/J McDonald) - $3.90F
2nd: Giga Kick (C Douglas/Z Purton) - $4.60
3rd: Skybird (M Freedman/J Allen) - $41
Winning Time: 1:09.58 Last 600m: 34.26
Margins: ½L x Neck
Besten jockey comments:
Ethan Brown (Jimmysstar): "He is back on track. Will be peaking third up."
Tyler Schiller (Briasa): "He tried hard. Got into an OK spot early. Just doesn't seem to love the soft ground as much as he does good. Doesn't let down late."
Zac Purton (Giga Kick): "Great run. Really good effort. I thought he had it at the 150m but he sort of peaked on his run."
Josh Parr (Overpass): "What a warrior. He hated that ground but found a way to perform for us. An amazing horse and he's not done yet."
Rachel King (Mazu): "Super run again. Up against the best and keeps running really well."
Mark Zahra (Tentyris): "He began well but never really travelled for me. Had a chance to get off the fence but I was up at him most of the way just to get on the bridle. Travelled just before the bend when they sprinted. Didn't get through it but he didn't help me much through the run."
Michael Dee (Magic Time): "She stuck on well. Tracking along nicely for the 1400m."
John Allen (Skybird): "She went super. Thought we had a nice enough run. Probably peaked on the run with 50m to go."

(3yo+ Handicap - 1600m)
Race Result:
1st: Sheza Alibi (P Moody & K Coleman/J Melham) - $1.90F
2nd: Autumn Boy (C Waller/K McEvoy) - $10
3rd: Militarize (C Waller/T Clark) - $41
Winning Time: 1:35.62 Last 600m: 35.62
Margins: 4¼L x 1¾L
Beaten jockey comments:
Nash Rawiller (Gringotts): "He was unbelievable really. I did feel he was anchored by the weight today. He showed his turn of foot. Those horses with the light weights around us were able to get away from us. Fought it out right to the line."
Craig Williams (Pericles): "The barrier ended up being a real disadvantage so we had to go back. Followed up the winner but the winner had no weight. We had 57kg on our back. He stayed on really well. Got behind the eventual second horse in the straight. He felt his weight the way he had to be ridden."
Jason Collett (Headley Grange): "His pre-race antics didn't help things. He was very wound up. Was brave with the run he had."
Zac Purton (Evaporate): "He was on a bit of a mission. Did too much."
Zac Lloyd (Linebacker): Provided no comment
Tim Clark (Militarize): "He ran terrific. Winner put us away quickly straightening. To his credit he gathered himself back up and was strong over the last furlong and a half."
Kerrin McEvoy (Autumn Boy): "Great run by him today. Travelled nicely, enjoyed that ground, presented at the top of the straight. Winner was too sharp."
Tyler Schiller (Steparty): "Thought he was OK. The ground is a bit eaten up and he didn't love it."
Reece Jones (Vivy Air): "Had a tough run. Just got flattened at the top of the straight which didn't help. First half of the race was all wrong."
Andrew Adkins (Attica): "He tried hard. Simply outsprinted over the last furlong and a half. He wants further."
Braith Nock (Cristal Clear): "Saddle slipped straight out of the gates. Lost a lot of ground early. See how he pulls up."
Winona Costin (Scheelite): "Just wasn't up to them today on the soft track."
Alysha Collett (Encap): "Beaten a fair way."
Ryan Houston (Hellsing): "Horse didn't disgrace itself. A bit ambitious for the race it was in but got into a lovely spot. Fought well."
Rachel King (Sixties): "Very brave effort. A tough Randwick mile stretched him a bit."

Group 1 - ATC Australian Derby
(3yo SW - 2400m)
Race Result:
1st: Green Spaces (B Baker/R King) - $4.40
2nd: Dezignation (M Smith/T Schiller) - $151
3rd: Storm Leopard (B, W & JD Hayes/T Berry) - $4.60
Winning Time: 2:32.84 Last 600m: 36.36
Margins: 3¼L x Long Neck
Beaten jockey comments:
James McDonald (Observer): "He went super. He just wants quicker ground than that."
Zac Purton (Road To Paris): "The mid-race pace didn't really suit him. Didn't finish the race off."
Damian Lane (Deal Done Fast): "He ran well. Just gets difficult to get into a winnable position when he walks out of the barriers today and lost contact with the field from the 800m then gets home well. A horse with talent but making it difficult for himself."
Tommy Berry (Storm Leopard): "Extraordinary effort off the back up. The winner was set for the race and won accordingly. He has a bright future in the staying ranks. Looking forward to seeing where he ends up."
Zac Lloyd (One Step Closer): "Copped a bump out of the barriers which put me a pair or two further back. When Tyler got on his bike I was able to move in with them and he was strong performance."
Dylan Gibbons (Federalist): "A combination of not seeing the trip out and didn't like the footing underneath."
Ben Melham (Savisanta): "We had a good resting run. Just felt he never lengthened out in the straight. A bit short behind."
Luke Nolen (Victorious Spirit): "Just not quite mature enough. Will be a better horse in 12 months."
Mark Zahra (Kaye Jay): " He ran fantastic."
Michael Dee (Bingi): "Just doesn't stay."
Ashley Morgan (Are You Kidding): "Got a bump out of the gates and that lit him up. For him to run well he needed to get that first part of the race right."
Tyler Schiller (Dezignation): "He has run out of his skin. Stays all day and just kept plodding to the line. Very strong staying performance."
