Sushi delivers in Sheffield Cup
Sushi Express takes out the Sheffield Cup.
For a consecutive year, apprentice jockey Lauryn Bingley made a clean sweep of the traditional Devonport Cup lead-up races, winning the $50,000 Kevin Sharkie Sheffield Cup (1650m) on Friday afternoon.Bingley won the Golden Mile and Sheffield Cup aboard General Assembly in 2024, and while the Golden Mile moved on the calendar in 2025, the result was the same for Bingley, this year teaming up with Glenn Hodges, and Sushi Express ($4.60) for victory.
Sushi Express showed his customary early speed to take up a forward position, but an early move from race favourite Earendel ($2.60) to take up the running saw Bingley secure the perfect trail aboard the 8yo, and he was too strong over the concluding stages, defeating The Longest Yard ($6) and Blonde Star ($4.20).
Sushi Express finished third in this year's Devonport Cup, very narrowly beaten by Ashy Boy and Kaliuwaa Falls.
"He was second-up today, he was still a bit big in condition, and it was a big ask for him to back-up today after what he did 10 days ago (in the Conquering)," Bingley said.
"He's so tough, he's got a bit of mongrel in him, and he doesn't like getting beaten."
Sushi Express is the only horse that Glenn Hodges has in work and will now enter the $125,000 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup as one of the leading chances.
"I think he's a bit stronger this time in, so we're in with a big live chance this year," Hodges said.
3yos impress
A trio of three-year-olds justified strong market support on the 10-event card, racing away to dominant victories.
The Barry Campbell-trained duo of Mazzini ($1.18) and Sanniya ($1.30) were in a different class to their opposition in a class 4 (1350m) and BM76 (1009m) respectively.
Mazzini will now head to the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at the next Tasmanian thoroughbred meeting in Hobart on 28 December, while Sanniya will race in the $109,000 Ladbrokes Carpet Charge (1009m) on Devonport Cup Day.
Earlier in the program, the Adam Trinder-trained debutant Ozonica ($1.40) ran up to his trial form with an impressive maiden victory (1150m).
"He's been able to come here and get the job done and will continue to take improvement as he gets further exposed," Trinder said.
Bred by Grenville Stud, Ozonica (Stratosphere x Morgatoche) was passed in at $70,000 during the 2024 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
