Silver Magnate remains unbeaten
Silver Magnate has returned after more than 12 months away from the racetrack to remain unbeaten in two starts.
Trainer Grahame Begg says Silver Magnate is capable of one day winning a nice race, but for the time being is prepared to be patient.
Patience has been the key with the now five-year-old Silver Magnate who registered his second career win when taking out the Sportsbet Fastform Handicap (1200m) at Sandown on Wednesday.
At his only other outing, Silver Magnate won a maiden race on the synthetic track at Pakenham on debut, more than 12 months ago.
Sent out the $3.30 favourite under Jordan Childs, Silver Magnate scored by a length from Flying Valley ($10) with Some People Callme ($9.50) two lengths away third.
Begg said Silver Magnate dislikes very wet ground, but added the Soft 5 conditions on Wednesday were suitable for the gelding who has been plagued with joint issues.
"The horse has got loads of ability, but he's had a few issues along the way," Begg said.
"He's been very immature in the joints. Every time we would get him going, his joints would flare up and then we'd have to stop him.
"Time has been his friend and it still might be his friend as if we can keep him sound, I'm sure there is a good race in him.
"He's a five-year-old, and that was just his second run in a race, but he has a lot of upside."
Begg said he would not be rushing Silver Magnate to a higher grade.
He said he was likely to follow what he did with King Zephyr earlier in the year.
King Zephyr won five of his first six starts before going for a spell after finishing out of the money in his first tilt at Stakes company.
"He wasn't a cheap yearling and the ownership group has been very patient," Begg said.
"Hopefully they will be rewarded.
"We'll just take him through the grades, a bit like we did with King Zephyr and maybe we could aim him for the greys race during Melbourne Cup week."
