Reward returns in key Australian Cup lead-Up
Powerhouse sprinter Mepunga Reward returns to the metropolitan spotlight tonight at The Meadows, lining up for the first time at the circuit since last November’s Group 1 Sportsbet Topgun.
His latest preparation officially began last week at Geelong. After missing the start badly, Mepunga Reward worked home strongly to finish third, a performance that hinted he's just about ready to take on the best.
Trainer Jeff Britton said the Geelong run was always intended as a gentle reintroduction.
"I chose Geelong because I wanted to ease him back into racing," Britton said.
"Having more room on a bigger track was always going to suit him first up, and despite the beginning he found the line well."
Mepunga Reward takes his place in Race 8 tonight at 8.35pm, where he faces a stiff test against the flying Amron Dancer, who brings winning form into the race after claiming his past five starts in fast and consistent times.
"He's close to four years old now and I don't know exactly where he's at yet. I'll learn more on Saturday night but the Australian Cup is definitely the plan."
The Sportsbet Australian Cup Carnival is almost here. The three-week carnival begins on Saturday, February 14, opening with the Group 1 Temlee for sprinters and the Group 1 Zoom Top for stayers.
