Prime result reaches prize money milestone
Magnaprime bounces back in emphatic style.
Consistent four-year-old gelding Magnaprime smashed through the $200,000 career prize money mark with an impressive Class 4 victory (1400m) in Hobart on Friday afternoon.
Trainer Adam Trinder opted to reapply blinkers after an uncharacteristic unplaced run in Devonport at his prior start, and the change had the desired result.
Premiership leading jockey Erica Byrne Burke took Magnaprime ($2.50) straight to the front, and he had the race shot to pieces on the home turn, scoring a commanding victory by 3.5 lengths.
"We didn't know what to put his run down to last time," said Adam Trinder.
"We identified a lack of speed in the race, so we opted to take up a forward position, and I was pleased with how he hit the line, as he's been involved in a lot of close finishes in the past," the trainer added.
The Magnus x Fast Legend gelding was a $60,000 purchase at the 2023 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale, and Trinder indicated that Magnaprime may be aimed at the $75,000 Magic Millions 3 & 4YO feature (1200m) in Hobart on 6 February. Both the 2YO and 3 & 4YO features have been moved from Launceston to form part of the traditional Derby Day in Hobart.
Byrne Burke had a double on the program, partnering Johnnie Pinch ($2.80) to an all-the-way win in the opening race. Byrne Burke's premiership lead sits at six with 35 wins ahead of apprentice Jabez Johnstone on 29.
The legacy of the ill-fated Levendi continues to live on in Tasmanian racing, with the ATC Derby winning sire responsible for back-to-back maiden winners early in the day.
Levendi, who unfortunately passed away from Colic in October 2025, played his part in Tasbred bonuses going to Bella Chinkara (from White Gazelle) for trainer John Blacker, while The Little Bay (More Than A Rose) won the next race for Terry Evans.
Both horses won in a style that suggests their next victory won't be too far away.
"She'll keep improving, and I think she'll run a bit of a trip," said John Blacker about Bella Chinkara, who went around a $2.70 favourite after placing five times during her 2YO season.
Blacker added the last of the seven winners when Florence Glass ($12) won a maiden/class 1 over 2000m. He shared training honours with John Keys, who landed victories with Johnnie Pinch and Queen of Malwa ($5).
