Hobart - Sunday, 12th February 2023

Nine races will be decided on Ladbrokes Hobart Cup Day which follows on from a successful Derby Day on Friday.

In addition to the Cup, the Listed Thomas Lyons is always a highlight and this year is no exception with All-Star Mile candidate The Inevitable taking on a deep field of locals headed by the emerging Rebel Factor.

The rail moves to the +6m position after being in the true on Friday where the track raced in great order.

R1 The Hon. Elise Archer Mp Class 1 Hcp, 1400m

BANCA TOM (1) was well-supported last time but they were all running for second after a tearaway leader stole the race. He crossed the line with CORONATION VERONIC (4) there who had to do the donkey work carting up the field to the leader. SCARDIMALIA (3) was a touch slow out in that race which left him with nowhere to go from barrier 1. He draws the opposite side of the track this time. SALLY SUNSHINE (6) was scratched from Launceston last Sunday. She rolled forward last time and put in what was clearly her best of three runs for the campaign. PRINCESS TINA (5) is a new addition to the stables of Cameron Thompson and she won her maiden at start 26 two starts ago over this distance.

R2 North Hobart Mcdonald's Maiden, 1400m

CONUNDRUM (3) raced last Sunday where he wasn't able to settle as close to the speed in a big field as he did on debut. Up to 1400m on the quick back-up looks a positive but he'll need a bit of luck from a wide draw. RUE DE PALAIS (7) had his chance bowling in front on a moderate tempo and that unplaced finished with Tony & Calvin McEvoy has now seen him join Siggy Carr. I'M KEEFE (6) was strongly supported in Launceston but after racing outside the leader, tired in the run to the line. He may appreciate a return to his home track with winkers off. GEE GEES MISTY (11) comes via the same race where she camped just behind the leaders. She's another with proven Hobart form and gets Craig Newitt going on. NOXIOUS (12) steps out to 1400m at start number three with a reasonable platform to peak here. MIRA FLORES (10) ran on well in the same race after being forced to sustain a wide run. GRAND PEGASUS (5) comes through a maiden where the form is a query but the penny appears to have dropped for him. AUSSIE WARRIOR (2) beat home AURUM MAN (10) last time in Hobart and that form can receive a bit of a push on Friday. GONE GLOBAL (8) has run a couple of handy races in her brief career but will need to improve on her trials leading into this.

R3 Kevin Sharkie Maiden, 1200m

Scratching watch here with a heap of these accepted for Friday. PRINCESS MATOAKA (12) raced off the track resuming and stuck on very well behind Muscle Up who is a market fancy for a 3YO feature on Derby Day. She draws well here with McCoull taking the ride. MOVE LIKE JAGGER (3) was fair in Devonport and is a likely improver racing in the south. He's a horse that's become costly for punters. Stablemate DANTES (2) is on debut after holding his own against horses well above maiden grade at the trials. The 4YO has Blake Shinn to offset a wide gate. RUBBLEONTHEDOUBLE (8) also draws wide, and this looks more suitable for him as it does for PENNINE (7) and GOOGLY (13) who are in for the 3YO Hcp on Friday. ROHZHAE (4) had her chance racing on a slow tempo last time and will have to work from the draw to find the same spot here. ROYAL SCOTCH (14) draws much better here than he does for a Friday maiden and her trial was the quickest for that session. GEE GEES CHORIS (11) wasn't far off the placings in Devonport but may not have the upside of a few others in this field.

R4 Winning Edge Presentations Mdn/cl1, 1600m

CHARLIE BUCKET (1) demolished the field when winning his maiden just prior to Christmas and hasn't raced since. Straight into a Tasbred bonus race would seemingly be a target and he couldn't have done anymore in a recent trial. Few horses deserved a maiden win more than JACKJACK (2) who was on the right side of a photo finish at start 27. Second in that race has subsequently won. BLONDE SUSPECT (6) was wide the trip in that race so was a big run in defeat but draws poorly again. KATZENJAMMER (3) also comes through that formline where he wasn't beaten far and McCoull stays with him. Stablemate LYCALLEGRO (4) won on debut and worked hard early from a wide barrier last time. He has his first start in the south of the state. KINGS ON QUEENS (11) didn't have much luck at her first two starts and was fired to the front last time for an emphatic win. She's risen in distance at every career run. WOUNDED MISS (10) gets blinkers on the one-week back-up out of a fast run 2100m.

R5 Dean Winter Mp Bm62 Hcp, 2100m

Most of the field come via the Launceston BM62 won by AMERICAN JEWEL (8) who started $151. He tagged the back of favourite TRUE SCOTSMAN (2) there with both horses enjoying a nice transit and there was little in the finish. The winner rises 2kg so meets most of them worse at the weights. BANCA GLEE (10) rounded out a big price trifecta. She's eligible for easier but is racing in good form. NEED A FLUTTER (9) raced on the speed there and felt the pinch late. Expect her to strip fitter with that 2100m run under the belt. COSTERO (7) had a tough run but kept coming while CAPTAIN MORGAN (3) could never get warm after settling at the tail. GEE GEE ENUF SPEED (1) has been dictated to by slow tempos at her last two starts, the latest when NOZTRABEEL (4) dictated from the front. Craig Newitt goes aboard the toppy who has primarily been ridden by apprentices. This is a class drop for SUNSET GUN (11) and JOHN'S LAD (6) who have both been a bit out of sorts but it wouldn't totally shock if hey showed something. OLYMPIC HONOUR (5) won a similar race in Launceston just two starts ago.

R6 Graham Family Funerals Thomas Lyons Stakes, 1400m

After starting his All-Star Mile campaign earlier in the week, THE INEVITABLE (1) can let his performance on the track do some talking here. He's just been better than everything he has faced this campaign including REBEL FACTOR (8) when they met under these conditions in the Conquering. Both horses have won since then and this shapes as a likely race in two according to the betting market. FIRST ACCUSED (4) and MANDELA EFFECT (2) have proven themselves to be a rung below their superstar stablemate but have credentials to be best of the rest. ALPINE WOLF (5) hasn't raced since losing a Devonport Cup photo which was off the back of a plain looking 1400m WFA run. He hasn't raced in Hobart since arguably his career best effort in the Guineas as a 3YO. DARK WANDERER (10) is a last start winner in easier company but has repeatedly been found out in this class.

R7 Big4 Iluka On Freycinet Bm72 Hcp, 1100m

Track specialist ALGERNON (1) was scratched from the recent Carpet Charge with a bout of colic. He was right in the finish in the Winzenburg back in December, but EBB may need a bit of luck slotting in from the wide draw. He claims down to 61.5kg but GALENUS (2) will carry the full 63.5kg with Winona Costin booked. Along with stablemate STREET TOUGH (4) they didn't fire in the Carpet Charge and you need to go back a fair way to find their last victories. GEE GEE PLANE (5) raced three-wide without cover when winning last time in Launceston in easier grade. He has been unplaced in two previous Hobart runs but in turn appeared to have excuses for both. FAIRY MAGIC (7) gets good weight off those at the top and a few horses out of the Lady Lynette ran very well in the Bow Mistress. FIVEFINGERDISCOUNT (3) is very lightly raced as a 6YO and did win an open handicap early on last campaign.

R9 Ladbrokes Punter Assist Bm62 Hcp, 1400m

Big field to finish the day for punters. Potentially eight of them from Scott Brunton and Tegan Keys. At the top of the weights FREAK ON A LEAD (2) was scratched Friday from a race won by a stablemate even though he draws poorly here. BRINKTOP LAD (1) didn't run his best at his only run back in January but he's a better horse than that. STELLADONI (4) went through a purple patch of form last campaign and resumes here without a public appearance, as does LUCKY LIL  (5). GEE GEE MISS QUITA (12) had to close very hard to win last time in Launceston after the leader pinched a break. GEE GEES JENNIA (11) has raced without a lot of luck this campaign but is also the type of horse that gives a start with her racing pattern. ZIAVERA (10) has bounced back with a pair of useful runs in Launceston but has a wide draw to overcome. GEE GEE LUCKY JESS (7) wasn't far off last Sunday despite finishing worse that midfield and is going a bit better than the form reads. MR FREEZE (6) was fourth in that race in what was a pretty bunched finish. Stablemates RICH CLAN (3) and RAVAGE (9) are likely to be somewhere around the mark in what looks a hard finish to the program.
