Pinnacles Pointers - Key stats leading into week 2
Racing and Sports take a look at some of the key statistics surrounding Western Australia’s exciting new look racing carnival – The Pinnacles.
Moving into week two of The Pinnacles where we wait in eagerness for the running of the Group 1 Railway Stakes, we want to cast an eye over which jockeys are seeing them well and are worth following this weekend when doing the form.
While just heading over to the WA Jockey Premiership leader board might seem like the obvious solution, it may not paint the clearest of pictures. To ensure we land on which riders are in the most recent and best form as we charge full steam ahead toward the Railway Stakes, we decided to look at the jockeys Winning Strike Rate (WSR) over their last 50 rides.
The first hot jockey in focus is Kyra Yuill.
Sitting just outside the top five in the WA Jockey Premiership, Yuill has caught fire in her last 50 starts to shoulder a WSR of 22%. While Yuill is currently arguably Perth's form rider, the hot-hand hoop has only been booked for the singular engagement – funnily enough this is in the $1.5 million Railway Stakes.
In the weekend's feature race Yuill partners Searchin' Roc's. The talented four-year-old mare has made an immediate impact under new trainer Jim P Taylor, after transferring from David Harrison at the beginning of this preparation.
Closing off strongly to the line fresh in Stakes company, Yuill gave the daughter of Awesome Rock a smart on-pace steer to take out the G3 R.J. Peters Stakes at the latest.
Drawn to advantage in barrier three, Searchin' Roc's gets in at the bottom weight over the 1600m and should be able to land in an ideal spot under Yuill from the low gate. Saluting in two of her three third up runs, an extra push for the horse's chances appears when looking at the horse and jockey association – Yuill aboard in six of the horse's seven career wins.
$4 the field in the feature event, Searchin' Roc's profiles as a wonderful winning hope and currently sits as a $15 chance.
The second jockey worth keeping an eye out for this weekend is Patrick Carbery.
Sharing a WSR of 22% heading into Saturday's exciting nine-race card at Ascot, Carbery has ridden 11 winners from his last 50 starts and has been booked for five rides this weekend.
So, if you are keen to make an 'investment' or two involving Carbery on Saturday, here is what we think his best chances are.
Although without a ride in the Railway Stakes, Carbery does have the responsibility of piloting the highly touted Amelia's Jewel in the race prior in the WA Guineas.
An excitement machine, the skilful filly heads the market at $2.25 to take out 1600m Group 2 contest – a quote her trainer Simon A Miller suggested as being generous, had the punters witnessed her galloping work during the week.
Another of Carbery's key chances this Saturday comes earlier in race two with the Jason Miller-trained Strike Now.
On the third line of betting as a $9 chance, the four-year-old gelding possesses a strong turn of foot, as seen most recently when savaging the line in this grade. Drawn to settle closer to the action from barrier five and in what could be a winning jockey change, Carbery partners the son of Demerit for the first time.
With value aplenty heading into Ascot this weekend, why not stick with the in-form riders?
