Midnight can strike in Hobart
It’s a busy weekend for Tasmanian racing participants, with most backing up from Friday night’s Newmarket meeting in Launceston into Sunday’s card in Hobart.
Numbers have held up extremely well through eight races, most with near-capacity fields. Two horses that were scratched from Launceston on Friday will be chasing their first victories when they clash in the second division of the 1200m maiden.
Verhoeven from the Siggy Carr stable and the Jessie Bazan-trained Don Turboas will be among the top chances. The pair met at their most recent start with Verhoeven finishing second ahead of Don Turboas in a blanket finish.
Verhoeven has drawn barrier 8 and will be ridden by apprentice Jabez Johnstone, while Don Turboas has drawn the outside gate (15). Senior rider David Pires has the mount.
Another galloper set to create plenty of interest will be Sh'Bourne Midnight, who contests the 1390m BM76. A winner of six races and four at the distance, Sh'Bourne Midnight stands out as one of the best bets on the card.
Bingley starts her comeback
Meanwhile, apprentice jockey Lauryn Bingley is hoping to return to the saddle in early December.
Bingley has been sidelined since a fall in Hobart in late August but had her first ride back at the Devonport trials earlier this week.
"I'm feeling pretty good. I'm riding a few nice ones, a few that I know, so I will see where we are at," Bingley said prior to her first mount.
"Hopefully, I will be back the first week of December, all going well, get the weight and fitness under control, and we'll be back on track. I've started a six-week fitness program with Tasracing, so that will be good."
Bingley, rated one of the best apprentices in the state, has had an interrupted start to her career through injury and childbirth since her first ride in August 2022.
She has ridden a total of 68 winners; last season she rode 43 to place equal second on the apprentice premiership table and had made a promising start to the current season with five winners from only 19 rides before her injury.
The Hobart meeting gets underway at 12:26; all the action can be seen on Tasracing Live.
