Joliestar could strengthen Australia’s Royal Ascot team after enhancing her claims with victory in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick.

The five-year-old daughter of Zoustar, trained by Chris Waller and ridden by James Mcdonald, travelled strongly just off the pace before producing a sharp turn of foot to score. The win was her fourth at Group 1 level and preserved her unbeaten record this campaign after two starts.

Waller dominated the race, saddling the first three home, with Beiwacht finishing second and Lady Shenandoah third.

Joliestar had already returned in good order when winning the Group 2 Expressway Stakes over 1200 metres, and her next start is set to come in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 4. A first international trip to Royal Ascot is then expected to follow, with the King Charles III Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes among the options under consideration.

Her presence would further underline Australia's strong recent record at Royal Ascot, where sprinters such as Choisir, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti, Scenic Blast, Black Caviar and Asfoora have all enjoyed notable success. Waller has also tasted victory there with Nature Strip, winner of the King's Stand Stakes in 2022, now run as the aformentioned King Charles III Stakes.

Joliestar races in the colours of Cambridge Stud, which also saw Royal Ascot success when Hello Youmzain won the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in 2020.

Saturday's win also formed part of a remarkable Randwick haul for James McDonald, who rode six stakes winners on the card, with Joliestar providing him with the 127th Group 1 victory of his career.
