Grade 1-winning hurdler Salvator Mundi off the mark over fences
Willie Mullins’ talented hurdler Salvator Mundi enjoyed a first career success over fences when running out a routine winner of the Horse & Jockey Beginners Chase at Thurles.
The son of No Risk At All finished runner-up to multiple Grade 1 hero Sir Gino on his debut in France before moving to current connections and quickly developed into a smart hurdler of his own, landing the Sky Bet Club Moscow Flyer and TrustATrader Top Novices' Hurdle as well as filling the runner-up spot Grade 1 company at the Punchestown Festival.
Salvator Mundi suffered a shock defeat on his chasing bow before struggling to land a blow in the Racing Post Novice Chase on Boxing Day, but he made no mistake returned to Thurles this afternoon, making every yard of the running to record a 28-length success over stablemate Fishery Lane.
There was further success for Mullins and Townend at Thurles when Laurets D'estruval stuck in the Holycross Maiden Hurdle.
A runner-up at Pau on his debut for Lageneste & Macaire, Laurets D'estruval, who has since joined the Willie Mullins team and carries the colours of Rich Ricci, was looking to go one spot better than when second at Limerick on his stable bow.
Always well-positioned throughout, the son of Saint Des Saints stretched clear up the straight to beat Jet To Monte Carlo by a commanding thirteen lengths.
"He came on plenty for his debut, he's a smashing horse and hopefully he has a bright future," said Paul Townend on Racing TV.
"Lovely and genuine and honest, he gallops and jumps and did everything I wanted him to do. We went a nice even gallop, and he settled for me in front, so we kept it simple. He lengthened right away down the straight, when I went dipping, there was plenty there, so I enjoyed that."
