Dubai Honour down under again
Dubai Honour is chasing the record for most Australian Group 1 wins for a northern hemisphere-trained horse when he returns for another Sydney autumn carnival campaign.
If Dubai Honour can win another feature race this autumn, it will be his fourth Australian Group 1 success, breaking a deadlock with former stablemate Addeybb who also won three majors.
"Dubai Honour is a marvellous horse. He had a great year last year and he is in really good shape,'' Haggas told Racing And Sports.
"He will go to the Tancred then the Queen Elizabeth and all going well, we might take him to Hong Kong and take on Romantic Warrior, which will be difficult.
"But he's in very good form and raced well on the all-weather tracks in December. Last start, he gave weight to a very smart horse in Shader and ran a close second.
Dubai Honour is returning to defend his title in the Tancred Stakes. He also won the Ranvet Stakes-Queen Elizabeth Stakes double in 2023.
Haggas began his very successful Sydney autumn forays with Addeybb who won the Ranvet Stakes-Queen Elizabeth Stakes double in 2020 and returned the next year to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes again.
Caviar Heights joined the Haggas stable last year and the trainer is aiming the son of former champion Sea The Stars for the Ranvet-Queen Elizabeth double.
"I think Caviar Heights is a nice horse, a 'solid' horse, strong and powerful,'' Haggas said.
"He will run in the Ranvet Stakes although there's an outside chance he could go to the Manion Cup.
"But earlier in his career he ran phenomenal time over the mile at Newmarket but then he went 'off' and when we bought him, we had him cut (gelded). He ran two good races for us then ran really badly in the heavy.
"I just feel he is a bit different this year and that's why I think he's more a Ranvet horse. I'm hoping both Caviar Heights and Dubai Honour will go to the Queen Elizabeth.''
Haggas has also retained a small share in his former stayer Sam Hawkens, who is now with the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton stable, and is due to resume in the Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill on February 21.
