Doubts over Newmarket Handicap jockeys
Trainer Bjorn Baker needs a new rider for Caballus and Hall of Famer Chris Waller may have to find a replacement jockey for Wodeton after the release of Newmarket Handicap weights on Monday.
Baker had secured Hall of Famer Hugh Bowman to ride Caballus but the jockey can't make the sprinter's 55kg impost for Saturday's feature Flemington spring.
Bowman is still flying in from Hong Kong as he will partner the Baker-trained Stefi Magnetica in the Group 1 All-Star Mile.
Baker's stable representative Luke Hilton said they are consulting with Caballus' managing owner, leading syndicator Scott Darby of Darby Racing, and coming up with a short list of possible riders.
It is understood Hong Kong superstar Zac Purton was approached but is unavailable for Saturday.
The situation is even more complicated with Coolmore's crack colt Wodeton as Hong Kong-based Karis Teetan has been booked to ride the colt at 50kg but the jockey is stranded in Dubai due to the escalating Middle East conflict.
Coolmore supremo Tom Magnier said he remains hopeful Teetan will be able to get a flight out of Dubai and be in Melbourne to ride Wodeton on Saturday.
Jimmysstar has been allocated 60kg topweight and needs to set a modern-day weight-carrying record to win the Newmarket.
Hay List holds the record this century, shouldering 58.5kg to win the Newmarket in 2012 while the legendary undefeated Black Caviar had 58kg when she won the race 12 months earlier.
Early Newmarket favourite, Godolphin's brilliant colt Tentyris, was allocated 57kg and if successful, would equal the all-time weight carrying record for a 3yo, set by the great Ajax in 1938.
