Sha Tin Preview - 1st February 2026
Brett Davis provides exclusive Preview of Sha Tin races.
Rail - B+2 Course
Race 1
#3 BUSTLING CITY was a NZ $160k purchase out of the 2024 Karaka Yearling Sale and has since trialled four times in Hong Kong for four wins.Zac Purton jumped aboard during his final two trials, both on turf, and the son of STARSPANGLEDBANNER showed speed, rhythm and composure before coasting untouched to the line. There's known pace drawn right across the gate here so it won't be just a sit and steer assignment, however he looks to have the undisclosed depth to win on debut.
#13 CONSPIRATOR was much improved when finishing 3rd at over 100/1 two runs back and he backed it up with something similar last start. The improvement can be attributed to the combination of a patient ride, in a straight line contest, because it's the only time he's produced any type of result. Now drawn more favourably nearer the outside rail he's much better placed, and the high degree of early speed anticipated creates a potential battle up front, which should further assist his closing strength.
#1 ALSONSO has gone close to winning an event of this nature on more than one occasion but hasn't been able to find the stamina to see it out.He was expected to be right in the hunt last start when dropping into class 4 but unfortunately suffered a heart irregularity during the event. He's since gone back to the trials on two occasions, with Hugh Bowman tightly nestled aboard, and passed the stewards compulsory test with literally flying colours.
#10 SILVER SPURS has displayed excellent barrier manners all season at Happy Valley and consequently notched up two wins.Shifting venues to Sha Tin and changing the environment to a straight 1000m race won't be easily digested but he has the race experience, and fitness over the debutants. The final furlong shall be the area of vulnerability, but the 5lb claim shall help.
#12 LAHORE found improved strength during the push to the line over this course and trip last start which can be attributed to running the longer 1400m at his two starts prior.Additional strength was gained by the aforementioned outings and matched up nicely with his natural and reliable gate speed. The low draw looks horrid here and won't make the task any easier, however he wont be blocked or short for room when push comes to shove.

Race 2
#3 I P O BROS has put together three encouraging results over the past month which is a good sign that he's settled into the change of environment. The former Singapore galloper was a two time winner before transitioning to Hong Kong and at his best placed 2nd in the 3yo, Gp3 Singapore Sprint. After drawing the outside barrier and having no luck two and three back he then drew gate 1, which unfortunately saw him locked away on the rail. With Hugh Bowman now aboard from a middle pin draw he should be finding the run to win.
#8 MAJESTIC DELIGHT has been specked in the betting at his past couple and it wasn't the first time he'd been the subject of monetary confidence. He's tactically versatile, from what's been witnessed, but more effective when ridden with patience. The wide draw again throws him into the, hard to be confident bracket, but it means he'll have room to close off unimpeded in the stretch. The jockey/trainer are both in fabulous form and his run in defeat recently, when wide, was terrific.
#7 ONLY U generally gives away a reasonable start but he's absolutely glowing in the mornings and busting to win, as displayed on the dirt last start. The option to come back to 1200m on turf doesn't read that inviting but it almost worked out recently so he must be kept safe.Karis Teetan stays on board for his good mate Brett Crawford, and with a touch of luck, he could hit the line in time to win.
#6 GENERAL SMART was slowly into stride on the dirt last start which put him on the back foot and under pressure throughout. To his credit, he knuckled down to the task in the home stretch before finding bother but was still making headway across the line. He's yet to finish any closer than 5th from a total of eight attempts but the appropriate draw, for the top jockey, would suggests that's about to change.
#13 GANGNAM STAR has produced three encouraging efforts this campaign and is just about ready to knock another victory into the back of the net. He's always given the impression 1200m is to short but his fast finishing capabilities can potentially bring him into the race.We know he needs a good speed to run at, and that should probably eventuate, so despite a hiccup last start he must be in included in discussions.

"HONG KONG CLASSIC MILE"
(4YO Classic Series - 1st Leg)
#3 INVINCIBLE IBIS arrived in Hong Kong an unraced "Private Purchase Griffin" but now makes his way into the 4yo Classic Mile field as the 3rd highest rated runner. That's curtesy of a quartet of high calibre and consecutive victories this campaign spanning between the 1400m and 1600m.He's a candidate Zac Purton recently abandoned, due to the presence of SAGACIOUS LIFE, but his racing pattern and unique swooping style shall be suited across the 4yo series.Hugh Bowman would've enjoyed the winning experience, and feel, gained over this precise course and trip last which can add an extra length to his output.
#2 LITTLE PARADISE arrived in Hong Kong unraced and has certainly delivered on any expectation connections had leading into his debut. With a good horses record of 5 wins from 8 starts established he now arrives at the 1st leg of the 4yo Classic Series in pristine condition. He's yet to elevate his racing to the distance of 1600m, which is why Zac Purton has opted for the proven Derby horse going forward SAGACIOUS LIFE, but it wont be a surprising, at all, if he's able to cope with the increase and blast up another win.
#1 SAGACIOUS LIFE was overlooked by many first up but produced an almighty effort over the final 150m to did deep and snatch the win. With freshness out of his system, and a rise of 15lb, he then struggled to close the gap under hard riding second up with a sluggish beginning making it difficult to comfortably travel.Zac Purton then took over the reigns in a trial leading into his most recent win and the 2024 G1 Brazilian Derby winner responded accordingly.Nevertheless, he continues to build momentum slowly, whilst racing under pressure, so perhaps the Classic Cup 1800m, and Hong Kong Derby 2000m, are the assignments for elevated confidence.
#4 BEAUTY BOLT is ideally prepared for his attack on the 4yo series first leg following five highly competitive performance over the Sha Tin 1600m.Without much improvement to come, his challenge today is to navigate the wide draw by slotting in somewhere with cover, and preferably handy to the speed.Zac Purton was able to orchestrate that picture perfect from the outside alley last start before he went down fighting to INVICIBLE IBIS, during the final strides.James McDonald would be odds on to produce a similar steer, so he can't be completely dismissed as another winning option.
#6 INFINITE RESOLVE appears to be arriving at this event a few months behind the runner's tipped above him which would primarily be due to acclimatisation.Conversely, his closing 2nd place last start behind LITTLE PARADISE over 1400m was sectionally excellent, and furthermore, admirably achieved under the significant combination of a rise in class and distance. The low draw doesn't appear ideal, because he'll likely settle on the rail amongst the pack, but in an even edition of the 4yo CLASSIC MILE a top three result wouldn't surprise.
