Change of luck overdue for Bauhinia
Stakes placegetter Bauhinia kicks off her latest campaign at Randwick.
Being a natural backmarker means relying on luck in the run, and Bauhinia hasn't always had a lot of it.
Co-trainer Lee Curtis is hoping the mare's fortunes can finally take a turn for the better this autumn, starting in Saturday's Wenona Girl Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
"Her work has been as good as ever, if not better," Curtis said.
"Her trial was really good. She finished behind Peter Snowden's horse, Raging Force, and she beat home Arctic Glamour in the trial.
"She's going super. We only gave her one trial but we're happy."
The winner of two of her 11 starts, Bauhinia measured up to some of Sydney's better mares in the spring, finishing a luckless fifth to Stefi Magnetica in The Invitation (1400m) and just failing to run down Arctic Glamour in the Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).
Curtis says she will again be given time to find her feet from a midfield draw on Saturday to give her the best chance of unleashing her withering finish.
"It's a six furlong race, so she will be getting back anyway," he said.
"She's third in the betting so she is a chance."
Only three horses are at single-figure odds for the Wenona Girl, Gangsta Granny ($3.20) shading Idle Flyer ($3.50) for favouritism, with Bauhinia on the third line of betting at $9.50.
