Bentornato bags Breeders’ Cup sprint prize

Just forty minutes after watching Shisospicy take the field apart in the Turf Sprint for a breakthrough Breeders' Cup win, trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo was once again enjoying sprint success as Bentornato deployed similar tactics to run out an authoritative winner of the dirt equivalent.

Following a swift exit from gate ten, Bentornato found himself prominently positioned throughout under Irad Ortiz Jr, who was also looking for a quickfire double having steered Shisospicy to victory.

Those behind were always close enough to challenge if good enough but Bentornato impressively kicked for home after rounding the last turn, putting his rivals readily to the sword before drawing clear to a comfortable victory.

The four-year-old son of Valiant Minister, who was avenging his defeat from twelve months ago having filled the runner-up spot behind the reopposing Straight No Chaser, had only raced once in 2025, winning in Listed company at Churchill in September.

"So happy to stand here again," said Jose Francisco D'Angelo. "We prepared these two horses all year round to have them ready for today and it worked perfectly.

"We think about all the small details, like the travel and everything. They figured it out and they showed up today. I am just grateful to God to stand here."

Winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr added: "Jose (D'Angelo) said he was doing so good honestly. We were so positive on the horse. All we wanted was a clean break, and after that, I let him be, let him be him.

"He can use that speed, natural speed. He's a nice horse. I had Straight No Chaser right beside me. And, he was in that order as a 3-year-old last year, and he just got beat by a head by that horse. So, I just tried to ride him with confidence. I was working my horse since the summer. I know I was going to have some horse at the end."
