A rumoured $70m deal has Coolmore Super on and off track
Coolmore Australia has purchased New Zealand’s sire sensation, Super Seth, in a stallion deal believed to be one of the biggest ever in the southern hemisphere.
Tom Magnier, Coolmore's supremo, refused to comment when asked to confirm if the rumoured price tag was correct.
But Magnier admitted that global racing and breeding giant Coolmore was "very keen" to add Super Seth to their Hunter Valley stallion roster.
"Coolmore has only gone out twice before to secure a proven stallion and that was with Encosta De Lago and then Wootton Bassett,'' Magnier explained.
"But after we lost So You Think and Wootton Bassett last year, we felt there was space for a proven sire and Super Seth ticks all the boxes.''
Earlier, Coolmore issued a press release confirming they had secured Super Seth from Waikato Stud where he had stood for six season.
"Super Seth has been on our radar for a while now and he strikes us as a stallion that can make a significant impact on the Australian breeding industry,'' Magnier said.
"For a young horse, the trajectory that he is on is something that is rarely seen.
"To produce three Group 1 winners in Australia (Linebacker, Feroce, Maison Louis) from his first crop including two Guineas winners and follow it up with a Champion Two-year-old (La Dorada) in his second, is an amazing achievement.''
Super Seth's son, Feroce is rated a $11 chance in the Group 1 $750,000 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Chris Waller-trained Confederation was impressive on debut, finishing a close second to stablemate Hidrix in the Canonbury Stakes.
The duo clash again in the Silver Slipper with TAB Fixed Odds price assessors rating Confederation at $4.20 and Hidrix at $4.60 behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Shiki at $3.90.
"I know Chris likes the two-year-old, he is very happy with him and so is James (McDonald, jockey),'' Magnier said.
"They seem to be a very good bunch of two-year-olds but we are hoping Confederation continues to improve as we are trying to get him into the Golden Slipper."
Wodeton, runner-up in the Golden Slipper and Golden Rose last year, resumed with a closing third behind boom filly Tempted and Napoleonic in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.
"We will see how he goes,'' Magnier said. "I know Chris has been very happy with the colt's work at home.''
In latest betting, Wodeton is rated a $14 chance behind the Michael Freedman-trained Ninja at $3.10 favourite.
