“It’s a long way away but that has to be dream” – Estrange given long-term Arc target
Connections of the high-class mare Estrange have pinpointed the 2026 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as their main objective for the upcoming season.
Trained by David O'Meara for top owner-breeders Cheveley Park Stud, Estrange progressed nicely through the ranks last season, winning both the Lester Piggott Fillies' Stakes and Lancashire Oaks at Haydock before chasing home subsequent Arc runner-up Minnie Hauk in the Yorkshire Oaks in August.
A trip to Paris had been on the cards following her excellent York effort but connections instead opted to remain on home soil, a decision which saw her once again finish a creditable second behind Arc seventh Kalpana in the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.
With soft ground essential and another year of racing under her belt, connections now have their eyes on Europe's premier middle-distance prize.
"She's had a nice break at the stud," said Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park, who was speaking to Sky Sports Racing.
"She really did very well physically. I was delighted with the way that she's progressed. She's gone back to David (O'Meara), and he is just ticking her over now, where we go, we're just going to have to wait and see as the ground is dependent.
"We may consider the Lester Piggott Stakes again, but it will depend on the ground and when she tells us she's ready.
"Hopefully, a dream of the Thompsons is to have a runner in the Arc, so it's going to be working back from there. It's a long way away but that has to be the dream."
